How to Apply for Knight-Hennessy Scholars

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars application allows talented students from around the world to compete for graduate funding at Stanford University. Applicants must submit two separate applications: one to Knight-Hennessy Scholars and another to an eligible full-time Stanford graduate degree program.

Who Can Apply for Knight-Hennessy Scholars?

Applicants from any country may apply. There are no restrictions based on citizenship, country of residence, academic field, career aspiration, or age.

However, candidates must satisfy two main requirements.

Stanford Graduate Program Admission

Every candidate must apply to, receive admission from, and enroll in an eligible full-time Stanford graduate degree program.

Eligible programs include graduate and professional degrees offered by Stanford’s schools, such as:

Admission to Knight-Hennessy Scholars does not automatically provide admission to Stanford. The scholarship and academic program applications are reviewed separately.

Undergraduate Degree Date

For the 2027 cohort, applicants must have earned their first bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in January 2020 or later.

Applicants currently completing an undergraduate degree may apply if they will complete all degree requirements by September 2027.

For applicants who served in the military, the eligibility period is extended by two years. Eligible military applicants for the 2027 cohort must generally have earned their first degree in January 2018 or later.

Knight-Hennessy Selection Criteria

Knight-Hennessy Scholars evaluates candidates according to three principal criteria.

Independence of Thought

Applicants should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, creativity, open-mindedness, and an ability to approach problems from different perspectives.

Purposeful Leadership

Candidates should show that they can motivate other people, make responsible decisions, accept challenges, and work toward meaningful objectives.

Civic Mindset

Applicants should demonstrate humility, integrity, empathy, resilience, and a commitment to contributing positively to their communities and society.

There is no single achievement, score, story, or personal background that guarantees selection. Applicants should use authentic examples to demonstrate how they meet these criteria.

Two Separate Applications Are Required

This is the most important part of the process. Applicants must complete:

1. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars application
2. A separate application to an eligible Stanford graduate degree program

The two applications have different requirements, evaluation committees, and deadlines.

In the KHS application, applicants identify the Stanford graduate program to which they are applying. In the Stanford program application, they indicate that they are also applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars.

An applicant may receive Stanford admission without receiving the scholarship. However, a candidate cannot become a Knight-Hennessy scholar without being admitted to a Stanford graduate program.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars application has five main components:

KHS does not publish a separate minimum GPA or standardized test score.

Recommendation Letters

Two recommendation letters are required for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars application.

Academic and Professional Intentions

Applicants describe their short-term and long-term academic and professional intentions within 250 words.

Personal Experiences

Within a combined limit of 250 words, applicants explain when they:

• Engaged with someone who held a different perspective
• Acted with courage
• Fell short of expectations

Eight Improbable Facts

Applicants provide eight facts about themselves that are unlikely but true. The combined limit is 150 words.

This section should reveal the applicant’s personality, interests, experiences, or unexpected qualities rather than simply repeat achievements.

Personal Essay

The essay prompt asks applicants to “connect the dots” and explain how influences in their lives have shaped them. The maximum length is 550 words.

The strongest essay should be personal, reflective, and written in the applicant’s authentic voice.

Stanford’s official AI policy permits limited assistance for brainstorming, early organization, spelling, or grammar. However, applicants must not use AI to generate draft responses, significantly rewrite their work, or replace their own thinking and voice.

How to Complete the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Application

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars application should be prepared alongside the selected Stanford graduate program application.

Step 1: Check Your Degree-Date Eligibility

Confirm that your first bachelor’s degree was earned within the applicable eligibility period. Current students should verify that they will complete their degree before enrollment.

Step 2: Choose a Stanford Graduate Program

Select an eligible full-time Stanford graduate degree. Carefully review its academic qualifications, required tests, application fee, documents, and deadline.

Step 3: Create Both Applications

Open the Knight-Hennessy Scholars application and the separate Stanford graduate program application. You may work on both applications simultaneously.

Step 4: Prepare Your Documents

Collect your transcripts, test scores, one-page résumé, personal information, activity details, awards, and other required records.

Step 5: Register Two Recommenders

Enter your recommenders’ information early. Give them enough time to prepare specific and detailed letters before the deadline.

Submit the Stanford graduate program application by its KHS deadline. If the program’s ordinary deadline is later than December 1, 2026, KHS applicants must submit by December 1 to remain eligible. Stanford MBA applicants must apply in Round 1.

What Happens After Submission?

KHS reviews submitted applications separately from Stanford’s graduate admission committees.

Some candidates may receive an invitation to submit a video statement during January. Selected applicants then advance to the finalist stage.

According to the current timeline, finalists for the 2027 cohort are expected to be notified on January 27, 2027, while selected scholars are expected to be notified on March 16, 2027.

Applicants must also remain competitive for admission to their chosen Stanford graduate program.
